Its creator, Leslie Lorey Irvin, patented the design of the first bomber jacket in 1926 with the aim of protecting and warming aviators at high altitudes and very low temperatures. The popularity of the bomber jacket grew and its wearers were also identified with war heroes, so its use progressively extended naturally into the civilian sphere. The first models of bomber jackets were made with leather on the outside and sheepskin on the inside, but these materials were gradually replaced by more modern and lighter ones, leading to the current nylon and polyester.
